We all know and love Spicy Sports, one of Whistler’s locally owned and operated rental stores. Skis and boards through winter, and bikes through summer, this is a go-to for picking up the gear you need to get out and enjoy Whistler’s outdoors.
But how well do you really know Spicy?
We recently chatted to the team about how they got started, what makes them stand out, and more!
How did Spicy get started?
Spicy was started over 3 decades ago by the late sea-to-sky local, “CUZ” Cousins. CUZ was an Ontarian who moved to western Canada years before the company’s inception and had woven his legacy into pioneering two iconic ski resorts – Lake Louise and Whistler. The opportunity to start an independently owned rental business presented itself and Spicy has stayed true to its roots since then.
What makes Spicy stand out in Whistler?
Spicy Sports is an independent, locally owned and operated business that has been a part of the Whistler community since 1992. We offer rental rates that are hands down the best in town, but we’re far from just a budget-friendly option. Our high performance equipment, featuring top demo models, is curated specifically for the resort, and our staff are trained to fit clients with a perfect set-up based on each customer’s needs. With a wide range of equipment — including skis, snowboards, snowshoes, bikes, and clothing — we’re committed to delivering exceptional service and top-quality products.

Which product or service are you most proud of and why?
Our High Performance offering – it’s the epitome of bang for buck! We offer current, top demo models specifically chosen for Whistler’s conditions. Every season, we introduce new models to offer our customers the best selection. Also, we don’t just allow it, but we encourage our customers to exchange equipment throughout their rental period to experience the subtleties between different models whether conditions have changed or they simply want to try something new. With our in-house tuning centre, we keep our gear in peak condition, ensuring the best possible mountain experience.
What challenges do you face running a business in Whistler, and how do you manage them?
Being an independent business in Whistler comes with its challenges, especially navigating the ongoing housing shortage. The local market evolves constantly with changes in mountain ownership, the economy, and competitive franchises. What keeps us resilient is our passion for the outdoors and the support of an amazing team. The team here is committed to innovation and continuous improvement, making each season better than the last.
What advice do you have for other local business owners?
Support your locals! Whistler is a tightly connected community where supporting one another makes a big difference. Whether it’s collaborating with neighboring businesses or choosing to shop locally, it is vital for the community.
Is there a business in town you particularly admire, and if so, why?
It’s tough to single out just one, as Whistler is full of inspiring businesses and organizations. From local shops constantly evolving to services like WCSS, WAG, and the Re-Use-It Centre, the spirit of community care and innovation stands out. We’re grateful to be part of such a dynamic and supportive environment.
